A second screen is one of the few genuinely useful purchases for desk work. It is also the fastest way to give yourself a neck problem, because of how almost everyone arranges the two.

The default arrangement is: main screen in front, second screen off to one side, angled in. It looks tidy. It means that every time you look at the second screen — which for a lot of people is most of the day — your neck is rotated and held there.

Rotation is worse than the forward tilt that a low monitor causes, because there is no way to compensate for it. You cannot lean into a rotation.

First: which screen do you actually use?

The answer decides the layout, and most people get it wrong because they answer with what they intended rather than what they do.

One screen is clearly primary. You write, code or edit on one and use the other for reference, chat or mail. Then: the primary goes squarely in front of you, centred on your body, and the secondary goes to one side, angled in. Turning your head occasionally is fine. Holding it turned is not.

You use both roughly equally. Then centring one of them is wrong, because you would be rotated half the day. Instead, straddle the join: put the seam between the two screens directly in front of your body, both angled slightly inwards, so you turn a small amount each way rather than a large amount one way.

The second layout feels wrong for about a day and then feels obvious. If you genuinely split your attention, it halves the rotation.

Then: match the heights

Two screens at different heights means your eyes and neck re-adjust every time you switch, all day.

Both screens want the same thing as one screen: top of the displayed image at or just below eye level, arm’s length away. The difficulty is doing it twice. Monitor feet differ, screens differ in size, and the usual result is one screen on the desk and one on a stack of books that is close but not quite.

This is the strongest argument for a monitor arm, and it is a much better argument than it is for a single screen. With one screen, a riser or a pile of books hits the correct height for a fraction of the price. With two, matching heights and angles by hand is genuinely awkward, and an arm makes both adjustable instead of fixed.

The laptop case

If your “second screen” is a laptop, an arm does not help you, because a laptop has no VESA mount and cannot be lifted without lifting its keyboard too.

The laptop needs a stand and an external keyboard and mouse. Then the external monitor goes in front of you at eye level and the laptop sits to one side at the same height, and you have a genuine dual setup rather than one screen at eye level and one in your lap.

Curved, ultrawide, and one big screen

An ultrawide sidesteps the seam and the height-matching problem entirely, which is a real ergonomic advantage nobody markets it on.

It brings its own: at that width the far edges are further from your eyes than the centre and off to the side, so you either turn your head anyway or you sit further back. If you go ultrawide, sit further back than you would from a normal screen, and put the thing you look at most in the centre rather than treating it as two screens glued together.

Before you buy an arm

Three checks that stop most returns.

  1. VESA holes. Look at the back of your monitors. If there is no square pattern of four screw holes, an arm will not fit without an adapter.
  2. The desk edge. Clamps need a flat edge of a particular thickness, with clear space behind. A desk with a back panel, a thick lip or a rounded edge may not take one.
  3. Monitor weight. Gas spring arms have a weight range. Below it the screen floats up, above it the screen sags. Both feel broken.

And the honest baseline: if you have one screen and all you want is height, books do that for nothing. The arm earns its money with two screens, or when you want the desk surface back.
