Blue light glasses do not work, and your eye strain has a different cause

The blue light glasses industry is worth hundreds of millions and rests on a claim that clinical trials have repeatedly failed to support.

Reviews of the randomised trials keep reaching the same conclusion: filtering blue light from screens makes no meaningful difference to eye strain, and the evidence for improved sleep from wearing them during the day is weak too. The lenses are not dangerous. They are just not doing the thing they are sold to do.

So if your eyes ache, burn, feel gritty or go blurry after a day at a screen, and glasses did not fix it, that is not because you bought the wrong pair.

What is actually happening

Three things, none of which are the colour of the light.

You have stopped blinking. This is the big one. Normal blink rate is somewhere around 15 to 20 a minute. Concentrating on a screen roughly halves it, and the blinks you do manage are often incomplete. The tear film breaks up, the surface of the eye dries out, and dry eye feels exactly like what people describe as “eye strain”: burning, grittiness, watering, intermittent blurring.

Your focusing muscles have held one distance for hours. The eye focuses at near distance using sustained muscular effort. Holding that for eight hours is a static load, in precisely the way that holding your neck forward for eight hours is a static load. The ache is the same kind of ache.

The screen is much brighter than the room. Your pupils cannot serve both at once. A bright screen in a dim room means constant adaptation, and that is genuinely tiring.

The four fixes that do work

1. Match the screen to the room. Your screen should be about as bright as a sheet of white paper sitting next to it. Most people run displays far too bright, especially in the evening. Look at a white page in a browser: if it glows compared with the wall behind it, turn the brightness down.

2. Blink deliberately, and fully. It sounds trivial and it is the single most effective thing here, because dry eye is the most common cause. Every so often, close your eyes properly for a moment. Not a flutter — a full, deliberate close.

3. Look away regularly. The common version is the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. The exact numbers are a memory aid rather than a finding, but the principle is sound — the focusing muscles need to release, and looking at something far away is how you release them.

4. Kill the glare. A window or a lamp reflecting off the screen makes you strain to read through the reflection. Turn the screen so windows are to your side, never behind you and never directly in front. If you can see a bright reflection in your own screen, that is the problem.

Where lighting genuinely helps

There is one real product case here, and it is narrow: working in a dark room with a bright screen.

That contrast is fixable, and the fix is to raise the light level around the screen without putting any light onto it. A monitor light bar does exactly that — it sits on top of the display and throws light forward onto the desk, not back at the glass. A desk lamp does the same job for less if, and only if, you can position it so nothing reflects.

If you work in daylight in a normally lit room, neither will do anything for you. Open the blinds instead.

When it is not the screen

Two things worth ruling out, because no purchase fixes either.

Your prescription. Screen distance — roughly arm’s length — is not the same as reading distance, and a prescription optimised for a book can be wrong for a monitor. If your eyes ache and your vision is blurry at distance after work, get tested and say specifically that you work at a screen all day.

Varifocals. These put the near correction at the bottom of the lens, which forces you to tilt your head back to see a screen at eye level. That gives you a neck problem and an eye problem at once. The fix is to drop the monitor lower than you otherwise would.

If symptoms are persistent, one-sided, or come with headaches or vision changes, see an optometrist rather than reading another article. That is genuinely outside what a website should be telling you.

The summary

Do not buy the glasses. Turn the brightness down, blink properly, look away from the screen regularly, and get the reflections off it. All four are free, and between them they cover the overwhelming majority of what gets called eye strain.

Buy a light only if your specific problem is a bright screen in a dark room. That one is real.
